A Wannabe Girl Story (Working Title)
A screenplay by Steve Cosmic. Copyright
       Draft 2.8, July 13, 2016
Draft, subject to change. Three or four more scenes will be added.

About a girl in her 20's who is raped and then decides to enter a bikini contest.

Is this credible? I have had lots of women agree it is credible, including a woman in her 60's. Three actresses who agreed, commented here.  A quick search on the net produced this quote:

"Some rape survivors may become prostitutes, strippers, sex symbols, or porn actresses, acting out sexually to release anger or to satisfy their need for revenge." Dorothy Neddermeyer, PhD, rape therapist.

So you can see that entering a bikini contest easily falls within the same realm. It may not be the most common reaction, but it is plausible.

Three or four new scenes will be added, along with one additional character. Also, it will be polished and expanded.

A woman, 20's has been raped a few days ago. The man, a bit older, was known to her. She is in shock for a few days, unable to function properly, neglecting her well being, including eating, hygiene, grooming and housekeeping. She stumbles upon an opportunity to escape her feelings, which also helps her block the memory. The escape plan is bizarre, but she embraces it to help herself survive. This story is about a few of the strangest days of her life.

EXT Back Lane, DAY

Mona is standing in front of a parked car. Camera is inside car, looking out through the windshield. "Rain" is falling so on camera she is blurred by the "rain" on the windshield. She is looking at camera, and then away a bit and then back at camera. The "rain" stops and she looks at camera, and then walks out of frame.

EXT.  LOW RISE APARTMENT BUILDING. DAY
Slow zoom in to ground floor patio window, with curtains closed.

INT. APARTMENT DAY

Mona Parker, 20's is dressed in a housecoat. Her hair is a mess, she looks disheveled. She has not bathed or gone outside for several days. She gets up from a table where she had been drinking coffee, and walks to the curtains and draws them open a bit and peeks outside. The daylight makes her squint. She wanders back to her coffee. View of the room, it is a man's apartment, and she looks out of place. She wanders into the kitchen for more coffee. There are a few dirty dishes about, junk food packaging, and trash on the floor. She sits again at the table with more coffee. Her phone rings.

MONA
Hello.

Her best friend Natalie is on the phone.

MONA
I'm doing better. I ate
a bit at least. (pause)
You're worried? Don't worry,
I'm OK.
I looked outside. I'm going
to go for a walk. (pause)

I don't want you to come
over. I'll be OK…..
I'll call you later…..(beat)
I'm getting used to the place.
I've got it for another two
weeks. ……… …..The guy…. he
makes websites or something….
He's older……….He's paying me
fifty bucks a day to stay
here while he's gone. (pause)
Yeah I'll call you later. Bye.

EXT BACK LANE, INTERSECTION WITH RESIDENTIAL STREET DAY
Mona is dressed plainly, with her hair in a pony tail, wearing a baseball cap, walking slowly, she looks around a bit. She hasn't been outside for several days. She pauses to look at some notices on a power pole. There is a notice for a lost cat, and for a moving service, guitar lessons, and a notice about an upcoming bikini contest. Mona reads the bikini contest notice, and tears off one of the phone numbers. She walks back to the apartment, walking faster, with purpose.

INT APARTMENT DAY

Mona calls the number on the little slip of paper, calling from her mobile phone.
MONA
Hello. Is this the place
for the bikini contest?
(pause) No I've never done
anything like this before.
(pause) A thousand dollars and
an award…… I want the award…..
even more than the money. It
will make me feel good to have
it. (pause) Yeah, I look good
in a bikini. …… that's only a
week away! I better start
exercising! (long pause) OK,
I'll write it down. (she writes)
……OK, thanks. I'll see you next
week! Bye.

Mona practically runs to the bathroom and starts undressing for a shower. A bit later she emerges with her hair wrapped in a towel, wearing her housecoat. She is excited. She calls Natalie on her mobile phone.
MONA
Hey, it's me! I'm going to
enter a bikini contest!

EXT   HIGH RISE APARTMENT. ZOOM TO AN UPPER BALCONY DAY

CUT TO: INT   NATALIE'S APARTMENT DAY

Natalie is sitting at a table, with an open laptop, and some study books, a coffee mug, and a small vase with a slightly wilted flower.
Her phone rings.

NATALIE
A bikini contest? Jeepers,
you're so shy. Especially
about showing your body.

CUTS BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE TWO

MONA
Yeah, I know. That's why
I'm going to do it. To gain
confidence and self esteem.
I used to wonder how girls
could do that, and now I'm
going to find out.

NATALIE
Will you get paid?

MONA
There's a one thousand dollar
prize and an award.

NATALIE
Oh….that's good. Umm…

MONA
What's the matter? Why'd
you say umm?

NATALIE
Well, umm, are you doing
this to block your feelings
about what happened?

MONA
What do you mean, what happened,
nothing happened. I'm OK, and
I really want to do this.

NATALIE
Well we're best friends so of
course I support you……

MONA
Well, I'm excited. It will be
good for me to do it. It's in
a week and I have to get in
shape.

NATALIE
But a bikini, jeepers, you
don't even like wearing a
bikini.

MONA
Well, I'll overcome that.
(beat) I'll live in a bikini
for the whole week!

NATALIE
That'll be something. I'll
have to see that.

MONA
Well, I'll wear my bikini
all day today, inside, while
I exercise. And I'll have
to start wearing it in
public.

NATALIE
Well it will sure be a change
for you.

MONA
And I'll have to buy a couple
of new ones. ….. OK…. well
I'm going to put my bikini on
now and start exercising.

NATALIE
Well I have to say
you sound a lot better
than you did an hour ago. I
can come by later….?

MONA
OK, sounds good. I'll call
you later. Bye

NATALIE
OK, bye,

Natalie stars off into space for a moment and sighs. She touches the wilted flower.

INT MONA'S APARTMENT A BIT LATER DAY

Mona comes out of the bedroom wearing a bikini. She walks into the kitchen and picks up some trash from the floor and tidies a bit in the kitchen. She comes out of the kitchen with a small yogurt container and a spoon and sits at the table and eats. She is feeling happy. She goes into the hall closet and comes out with two small hand weights, and does some exercises.

She goes into the bedroom and comes out with a tall mirror and leans it against the wall. She does some modelling poses and looks at herself in the mirror. She exercises again with the small weights, looking at herself in the mirror. She sits and eats more yogurt and some cereal.

She walks to the stereo and puts on some music and then walks to the mirror and starts to dance. She is timid at first, and gets into it more after a bit. She turns the music off and sits, and looks into space.
FADE OUT

Mona awakens from a nap on the couch. Her phone rings, it is Natalie.

CUTS BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN NATALIE'S APARTMENT AND MONA'S APARTMENT.

MONA
Hello.

NATALIE
How's it going?

MONA
Excellent! I just had a nap.
I did some exercises and some
dancing, and I feel great!

NATALIE
Why were you dancing?

MONA
Dancing is part of the contest.
I thought it would be… I called
and checked. A lady answered,
she seemed nice…..talking to
her made me
get even more excited about
entering the contest. (beat) I'm wearing
my bikini. I'm going to keep wearing
a bikini right up till the contest.

NATALIE
Well I'm glad you're feeling better.
You sound so much better.

MONA
Oh Natalie, I can't tell you how
much better I feel. …. Tomorrow I'm
going to go outside in my bikini.
I've got it all planned out….. I'm
going to wear my bikini under my
cardigan sweater. I can unbutton
it a bit to show I am wearing a
bikini. And when I start to feel
more brave… …. I shouldn't say
brave….. when I feel more confident
I can take the cardigan right off.
What do you think about that?

NATALIE
Well I think that IS being
brave. Or being crazy.

MONA
Well I read a book one time
about self esteem and the woman
said that taking risks
was good. Well anyway I'm gonna
try it.

NATALIE
You'll probably have people
looking at you.

MONA
I know. That's what I want. I
want to get used to it. I'm
going to go jogging….. can you
imagine that? I know it's cold
but I'm going to do it anyway.
And I'm going to record how I
feel and what I'm thinking.
(pause) I can record with my
phone.

NATALIE
Are you going to let anyone
hear your recordings?

MONA
I hadn't thought of that.
Maybe…. I'll let you listen
if you want. Well I want
to exercise more now. Tomorrow
I'm going to jog and buy two
bikinis . …… OK, bye.

Mona puts her phone down and picks up her small hand weights and begins to exercise in front of the mirror. She is looking intently
at herself in the mirror.

EXT A PARK BY THE OCEAN DAY

Mona is jogging. Camera follows her with her face visible. She looks happy at times. Other times she looks confused, sad, and then determined. She is wearing a bikini under a long cardigan sweater with a tie strap. She looks around as she jogs, and then unties the tie strap so her sweater opens. She jogs like that for a while. Then
she suddenly gets brave and takes the cardigan off as she jogs, holding it in one hand. She looks around and suddenly starts to feel free. She runs until she is out of breath.

(This scene, and some following scenes which involve jogging and exercising, including some indoor exercising, will be similar to music videos. There will be cutaway clips and there will be words sung which tell a mini story during these scenes. These scenes will each be about two minutes long.)

FADE IN

INT  MONA'S APARTMENT. DAY
Mona is sitting at the kitchen table, talking into her phone and recording it.

MONA
Well I did it… I actually
jogged in my bikini. A few
people looked, but I didn't
mind. When I was jogging, all
of a sudden I started to think
about something that happened
when I was 14. I was developing
fast. My breasts were big and
I saw uncle Robert looking at
me. I didn't like it. He said
something about me being a
Playboy model. And then I was
really surprised because my
mom said maybe that's all I
would be good for, because I
wasn't doing very well in
school. Well shit, so what, I
didn't fit in, and I couldn't
understand algebra and science.
Who cares, I was good in sports
and I liked writing. I wrote some
poems…… But anyway I don't know
why I thought of that when I
was jogging. I'm glad I was
brave enough to do it. And I
feel good. My skin is already
starting to look healthier.

Mona puts her phone down and sits quietly for a moment. She takes a couple of bites from an apple. She picks up her phone.

MONA
Well who cares why I'm doing it,
I'm feeling better and I might
even win. Natalie keeps talking
about what happened and I don't
know what she's talking about.
(pause) I'm glad she's my friend.
I don't know where I'd be without
her.

I've got to keep exercising.
The other girls have probably
been going to the gym for months.
(pause) Well, I do
feel better to record this.

CUT TO

Mona is doing floor exercises. She does each exercise until she can't do any more. She grimaces and makes noises sometimes as she strains. She collapses after the last exercise.

(This scene will be something like a music video, as mentioned previously.)

EXT. A DIFFERENT JOGGING AREA DAY

Mona is jogging. She takes her cardigan off right from the start. She is happy and smiling. She runs until she is tired and stops at a bench. She does some arm exercises and stretches, and puts her cardigan on but leaves it open and sits down.

(This scene will be something like a music video, as mentioned previously.)

Mona talks into her phone. She is puffing a bit as she talks.

MONA
I am feeling really good.
I know I can do the contest
OK. It doesn't matter so
much if I win, as long as
I enter and compete.

I was thinking about what
Uncle Robert and my mom
said. Why would they say
that? I don't know. I wonder
if I am being a bikini girl
because of what they said.
I don't know. They were stupid
to say that.

Mona gets up and looks at the pleasant park or beach scenery, and walks away happy.

Natalie is visiting. Her and Mona are having coffee.

NATALIE
You're looking good.
Have you lost weight?

MONA
Maybe about two pounds.
I'm getting firmer. I think
my skin is starting to look
really good.

Mona sort of displays her cheeks and touches one of them.

NATALIE
Your skin looks rosey and
healthy. Like an Olympic girl!

MONA
Oh, something funny happened
today. Actually a few things.

NATALIE
Like what?

MONA
I was jogging… you know that
paved area by the beach, and
this guy on a bike started
staring at me (she demonstrates)
and he ran into a dog!

NATALIE
Was he hurt?

MONA
You mean the dog or the guy?

NATALIE

I meant both.

MONA
I don't know and I didn't
care. It was soooo funny!
(beat) He got up OK and the dog
ran away, so they must
be OK.

NATALIE
That IS funny.

MONA
And a minute later I made
a guy on a skateboard
fall over!

NATALIE
ha…. (laughs)

MONA
And then…. I made an
old man drop his fries.
I stopped and watched him
watching the seagulls eat
his fries. It was hilarious!

NATALIE
It's that sexy body of yours.

MONA
Well, it might have been the
cold weather. My nipples
were hard. (laughs)

NATALIE
That's one good thing about
cold weather!

They both laugh. Mona thrusts her breasts out, and talks to them.

MONA
You make men do funny things!
(laughs uproariously)

NATALIE
I'm glad to see
you are getting your sense of
humour back. I would like to
have seen it!

MONA
I'm getting used to people
looking at me. I'll need to
feel OK about it to be in
the contest.

NATALIE
Yeah…. (beat) What's it like staying
here?

MONA
It's OK. I'm careful not to
move any of the guy's stuff
very much. I'll have to clean
up before he comes back.

NATALIE
Ahh.. are you OK? You know,
about what happened?

MONA
Nothing happened. Of course I'm OK.

Natalie looks away and sighs, and then looks back at Mona.

FADE IN A PLAYING FIELD WITH A SOFTBALL DIAMOND DAY

Mona is power walking, rotating both arms like windmills,
her cardigan in one hand. When she gets to the softball diamond she puts her cardigan on the players bench and walks to home plate. She stands as if she is at bat, and swings, and then runs as if she had hit the ball, running all around the bases and back to home.

(This scene will be something like a music video, as mentioned previously.)

She sits on the players bench puffing, and starts talking into her phone.

MONA
Ok, the contest is just
four days away. I'm in
pretty good shape, but I
want to get in better shape.
When I'm jogging or exercising
I think about the other girls
in the competition who have
been going to the gym for months.

Sometimes I think of myself
on the stage at the contest
dancing, and doing runway
walking. I think of everyone
looking at me. I know I will
be nervous but I'm going to
do it no matter what. (long pause
she looks around a bit, fusses
with her bikini)

And I'm still trying to figure
out why I am doing this. Maybe
it was uncle Robert saying I
should be a Playboy model. And
I'm hurt that my mom thinks
that's all I'm good for. (hurt)

Fuck 'em both.

Natalie says she's going to
come to the contest for support.
I really appreciate Natalie.

Mona gets an idea.

I think I'll have a dress rehearsal
before the contest. It'll be good
practice. I'll invite Natalie.

Mona gets up and starts walking home with her cardigan in her hand.
She walks a bit and then puts the cardigan on but leaves it open. A bit later she is walking in a lane and sees a guy washing his car. NEIGHBORHOOD MAN looks at Mona. Mona closes her cardigan and walks on.

herself like a blanket. She awoke from a nap a few minutes ago, and she is staring at the ceiling. Her phone rings, and it is Natalie.

CUTS BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE TWO APARTMENTS

MONA
Hey…

NATALIE
It's me, how ya doing?

MONA
Just woke up from a nap
a few minutes ago. I was
tired from exercising. What
are you up to?

NATALIE
I've been studying. But I
need a break. Do you want
to go for coffee?

MONA
Sure. Where?

NATALIE
Well, I could bring a couple
of coffee to that place where
we sat one time….
MONA
Sounds good. I can meet you
there in 15 minutes.

NATALIE

OK, see you.

MONA
Oh! Hey! I forgot to tell you...
I'm gonna get help with the
contest. I'm hiring some pros..

NATALIE
What do you mean?

MONA
Well I'm hiring a girl to
teach me some dance moves. She's
a go go girl in a bar. And I'm
hiring a girl who won a bikini
contest to show me how to walk.

NATALIE
Hmm! How did you find these girls?

MONA
I found them online. I'm paying
them 50 bucks each to come over
for an hour.

NATALIE
Well actually, that's a good
idea. OK, I'll buy coffee
and see you in a few minutes.

MONA
OK, bye.

EXT    OUTSIDE A RUGBY CLUBHOUSE AT A PLAYING FIELD. DAY

Mona is sitting on a bench, looking out onto a playing field
where players may be playing rugby or people may be playing frisbee.
Natalie arrives with two coffees in her hands. Mona opens her cardigan to show a bit of her bikini.

MONA
Hey.

NATALIE
Hey. Here's your coffee.

MONA
Thanks. I've been mostly
staying off coffee for my
training. This is a treat.

NATALIE
Aren't you cold dressed like that?

MONA
Yeah, but I don't care. I said
I was going to get used to living
in a bikini and I meant it. Confidence
is part of winning the contest.

NATALIE

Do you think you have a very
good chance?

MONA
Well, I dunno sometimes. I know
I have a nice body, and I'm getting
used to letting people see it. (beat)
I'm not a bad dancer. Taking
the dance lesson will help. If I can
be really confident, I think I
have a chance.

NATALIE
Well, I'll be there to cheer
you on.

MONA
Thanks Natalie. You're my best
friend. Without you I don't know
what I'd do.

They sip their coffee for a bit and look onto the field.

MONA
I feel so much better now, it
doesn't matter if I win or not.
All the training has been worth
it. And as weird as it has been,
it's been worth it letting people
look at me. (beat) But I still
really want to win!

Natalie puts her arm around Mona and gives her a little side hug.

MONA
Well I hope you can help me.
Where should we start?

BRANDY
You're getting it!
Smile more. Always
have a big smile.

Mona puts on a big smile.

BRANDY
And you have to look confident.
Being confident is very important.

Mona walks a bit more, and stops.

BRANDY
So when is this contest,
and where is it?

MONA
It's Saturday. (sensing

AMBER
Well I'll show you want I can.
It takes practice of course.
I've been dancing for years.

MONA
It went well. I learned a lot.
I hope I can remember everything at
the contest. I've only got two more
days to get in better shape and practice.
(beat)
I'm glad you are coming to the
rehearsal I'm going to do tomorrow.

NATALIE
No problem. I'm looking forward
to it. I want to see what you can

MONA
I'll pretend I'm on stage, and
you're the audience.

Mona lifts up a large stuffed tomato with a face on it.

MONA
You and Mr. Tomato head!

They both chuckle or smile. They both sip at their coffees. Mona
looks at Mr. Tomato Head. Natalie slowly turns and looks at Mona.

NATALIE
Mona, the contest and everything
is fine. But you've got to face
up to what happened.

MONA
Nothing …. (Natalie cuts her off)

NATALIE
Mona…. Mona… you were raped, and you know
it.

Mona's head and shoulders slump. She looks at her knees.

NATALIE
Remember we were chatting by email.
You had your webcam on and you
were showing me your new sweater.
I could see you, but you couldn't
see me because my web cam doesn't
work......

CUT TO (FLASHBACK)

View from Mona's webcam mounted at the top of her computer

a knock at her door. She indicates to Natalie watching that
she will be back in a minute. She walks out of frame.

NATALIE
You were using the computer here.
You let the guy in and I could see
him sit down.

NEIGHBORHOOD MAN walks into the webcam view and sits down. He is unaware that he is on camera. Mona walks out of frame. Mona speaks softly, as if in a daze. NEIGHBOURHOOD MAN can be seen sitting on the couch.

MONA
Then I made him tea. I remember
it now.
We talked…… he was funny.
(pause) I forgot about you
and the webcam…….

Natalie cries.

NATALIE
I saw it… I saw it all, except
when I had to turn away…. it
was awful…. I couldn't call the
police, well I could have except
I didn't know where you were.
I didn't know the address to
this place. I called your phone
and got your voice mail. Mona,
Mona, Mona…. it was terrible.
(she cries even more)

Natalie hugs Mona. They both cry more. Time passes.

MONA
I met him that morning and gave
him my number. He called and we talked and
I invited him over.

NATALIE
You should press charges. I have
it all saved in my laptop. Maybe
the police can find him.

MONA
Yeah... (softly) (several beats)
(suddenly) His number will be
saved in my cell phone! The
police CAN find him!
Are you sure you have the video
in your laptop?

NATALIE
Positive. I checked.
(beat) Will you press charges?

MONA
I don't know. I will have to
go to court and everything. I
have to think about it.
